Coding and billing for vaccines is generally straightforward- one diagnosis code (Z23), an administration code (90471/90472 or G0008/G0009 for Medicare) and the code for the vaccine itself. Covid-19 vaccine billing is slightly different since there are 2 doses, but once you know which codes to use, it'll be as easy as billing for the flu shot. Here is a breakdown of how to bill for each approved vaccine:

  • Pfizer- the administration code for the first dose is 0001A, for the second dose 0002A. The vaccine code is 91300 and use diagnosis code Z23. CMS has release the following fee schedule for these codes: 91300 $0.10, 0001A $16.94, 0002A $28.39; most other insurers will have similar pricing.

  • Moderna- the administration code for the first dose is 0011A, the second dose is 0012A. The vaccine code is 91301 and use diagnosis code Z23. The fee schedule is the same as above.

  • AstraZeneca- the administration code for the first dose is 0021A, the second dose 0022A. The vaccine code is 91302 and use diagnosis Z23. The fee schedule for this has not been released yet.

Please note: you cannot be reimbursed for the vaccine if it was provided to you at no cost. Need more help with billing for the Covid-19 vaccine? Contact Premier Medical Billing LLC for guidance.
