CMS has released the coding changes for January 2021 and the new and established patient codes for office/out-patient are changing, along with the required documentation. Below are some of the highlights:
CPT 99201 is being deleted.
There will be no required level of history for CPT 99202-99215. From the AMA: "The extent of history and physical examination is not an element in selection of office or other outpatient services."
The visit time will be defined as total time spent, including non face-to-face time, and will no longer strictly include time spent on the examination and counseling.
The Medical Decision Making (MDM) guidelines were revised and include the following three elements: number and complexity of problems, amount and/or complexity of data to be reviewed and analyzed and risk of complications and/or morbidity or mortality of patient management.
