No matter which side of the aisle you fall on, this presidential election is sure to cause anxiety and stress. While voting is of the utmost importance-it's your right, make sure you take advantage of that-staying calm and composed while awaiting the results are imperative. Here are some pointers from mental health professionals regarding how you should attempt to stay panic-free:
Don't watch every news station or check your newsfeed constantly. Instead, make a designated time, perhaps the top of each hour, to check in. Turn off your device(s) after checking for 5 minutes.
Focus on your self care routine, or even give it a boost. While the votes are being tallied, do something you enjoy like taking a hot bath, meditating, reading a book, playing a game with the family, exercising. Pick something that will boost your mood and take your mind off the election.
Have a plan for either outcome. No matter who the winner is, you need to have a strategy to deal with it. If your choice doesn't win, become involved in groups that advocate for the platforms important to you. Don't let your voice go unheard, but be productive. If your choice does win, celebrate with friends and family.
Remember, mental well-being is truly important in all aspects of our lives. Take time to care for yourself and those close to you. It's normal to feel some anxiety on election night, especially this year, but if starts affecting your normal routine, please do not hesitate to seek help.
