As the end of 2021 draws near, many providers are still using telehealth with patients since the Public Health Emergency is still in effect until January 13, 2022. It is likely that this will be extended again, too. So, can you still get paid for telehealth in Massachusetts? The short answer is yes. We looked at the major insurers that provide coverage in MA and found that only Aetna gave a review date of June 2022 to determine if coverage will continue after that. Medicare has said they will continue through the end of 2023 and their final rule issued in November 2021, stated that the geographic restrictions have been eliminated for mental health services offered via telehealth. Of course, CMS will review their policies and make decisions in 2023 that will affect all future telehealth visits for all specialties and PCP's. In the meantime, continue seeing your patients via telehealth to keep everyone safe.
Please remember all insurers have different regulations regarding the place of service and modifier(s) required for telehealth billing. Visit each insurance website to see their specific rules. If you have questions regarding telehealth billing, contact us today!
