It is a commonly known fact that people often leave a job because of poor management. This can be due in part to lack of communication, consistency or room to grow. Many employees aren't basing their tenure on salary; in fact, fewer than 15% of people who quit say it was for a better paying job. So, what can your management do to keep talented staff employed at your company? Here are 6 characteristics of effective management:
Communication: Keeping employees informed of policy or protocol changes and job requirements and expectations is imperative. Make sure the management team is on the same page before making announcements. Listen to the team and involve them in problem resolution.
Knowledge: Experience in the field is a must. Good management should be able to recognize potential problems before they occur and work to prevent them.
Reliability: Management must be available for staff questions and concerns. They should be involved and visible in day to day activities. Earning the trust of the staff is essential so they will come to you with issues.
Development: It is important to recognize progress and not just results. Offer in-services or training to help your employees grow within the company. Utilize team-building to encourage your staff to work together toward a common goal.
Diplomacy: Workplace disputes are unavoidable but good management treat both parties with respect and help them come to a compromise. Do not take sides or play favorites; mediate fairly.
Delegation: Knowing when to assign tasks or step in is important. Delegating doesn't make management lazy, it makes them effective. Trust your staff with their assignments and don't micro-manage. Remember, you hired them for a reason.
Following these key points will help your management team to be more effective. Take time to ensure your staff feel recognized and valued. Provide feedback and keep all lines of communication open. If your staff has confidence in the management, they are more likely to stay. Interested in management training at your facility? Contact us for available packages.
